Whenever I read something, I mumble the words to myself under my breath as it helps me to understand the meaning better, while it is not exactly reading aloud, it serves the same purpose. It slows me down as I read so I understand the concepts and meanings better. Unfortunately, reading aloud is not always socially acceptable which is why I mumble the words under my breath. Also, I never begin something that I cannot finish in one sitting, so I actively remain focused and engaged on what I am reading.
As for which I find least effective, I do not like having to stop to take notes on what I am reading after set intervals. I find that it takes away from my focus on the story as well as my interest in it. I am not saying that taking notes while reading is not useful, just that sometimes there is really no valuable information in a paragraph or a section of the book or story. It just serves as background or filler. One of the reasons I prefer the physical copies of books over their electronic version is that I am able to highlight and write out my notes in the margins as I go. I do not have to copy and paste and use another application to record what I deem important.

I feel you on how useful these strategies were. I found using the timer was much more distracting and actually encouraged me to speed read through the works in order to read enough and not have to stop and not have enough information.
ReplyDeleteI always mumble my words when proofing, but I when I did this exercise I read the stories to my dog. I found that I was paying more attention to the flow of a story and how it was punctuated, in comparison to understanding the meaning and identifying the theme.
